Description of Programs

GENERAL HUMAN SERVICES RESOURCES

LA Helps! is a website that helps families learn about all the public health and human service programs in Los Angeles County. They provide information on eligibility, how to apply and what services are offered.

2-1-1 Los Angeles is a hotline and website that helps families learn about all the public and private non-profit agencies that provide health and human service programs in Los Angeles County. It also provides other information, such as transportation, disaster information and public health alerts.

SUPPORT AND REFERRAL SERVICES

Early Start Family Resource Centers help families who have children with special needs or who are worried that their child may have a special need. They offer support, resources, information and referrals.

DENTAL HEALTH

Denti-Cal is the dental program for children and adults who have full scope Medi-Cal.

HEALTH SERVICES & ASSISTANCE

California Children’s Services (CCS) is a program that pays for medical services for children with certain special health care needs. They arrange and pay for assessment, medical care, equipment and rehabilitation for CCS-eligible conditions.

Child Health and Disability Prevention Program (CHDP) provides free health exams for children age 0 through 20 are low income or on Medi-Cal.

Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (CLPPP) is a program to prevent and treat lead poisoning. They can check your home for lead and do nutritional checks for children who have severe lead poisoning. They can also provide resources for families of children who have moderate lead poisoning.

Medi-Cal pays for health and long term care services for low income Californians and individuals with very high medical expenses.

Healthy Families provides health insurance for some children who do not have insurance but their family’s income is too high to qualify for Medi-Cal.

Mental Health provides crisis and suicide intervention and referrals to appropriate mental health professionals or programs. Assistance is available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

EARLY CHILD CARE AND EDUCATION

Welcome Baby Kit is a box of books and videos on parenting for families of children birth to 5 years old. It comes in English or Spanish, and is funded through the First 5 Commission of CA.

Child Care: Resource and Referral Agencies help families find quality low-cost child care.

Early Head Start (0-3) is a program that supports healthy pregnancies and child development. It provides parent education, home visits or school based services for infants and toddlers, health services, and family support.

Head Start (3-5) is a program for preschool-age children of low-income families or children with special needs. It provides pre-school, parent education, family support and health services.

DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITY SERVICES

Regional Centers for the Developmentally Disabled: funds services for people with developmental disabilities. There are 2 programs:

  1. California Early Start for children 0-3
  2. services for people over age 3

Special Education: provides services through local public schools for children with special learning needs starting at age 3.

FAMILY ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS

Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF): This program provides cash, food stamps, job training, and funding for childcare for low -income families with children.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI): provides cash and Medi-Cal to low income individuals with disabilities, children who have lost a parent, and adults with disabilities.

Women, Infants & Children (WIC): is a program for healthy nutrition for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding or postpartum women, infants and children up to 5 years old. They provide food, nutrition education and counseling, screening, and referrals to other services.
